Which Portable GPS Navigation System is the Best For Lake Boating?

by Donald Stuart

There are a number of portable GPS systems that can be used for lake boating these days. However, some of these might just be average while the others may give you the best possible value for your money.

There is a huge difference between using GPS navigation on land and in water. So, what may work on land may not be that effective in water.

Here are some of the important qualities that are required in a portable GPS system for lake boating:

Your GPS system should be able to utilize a minimum of 12 out of the 24 satellites to give you precise results regarding your position.

The screen on the GPS should be bigger (at least 7") which allows you to see without squinting. Moreover, you need a bigger screen to make out the difference between a fish and rock, which is at the bottom of the lake.

Your GPS system should also be able to tell you the amount of water below the boat.

It's a good idea to have a GPS system which has a lot of different alarms to warn you of different aspects like the depth of the water, low battery, temperature change, water temperature, way point, proximity indicator.

It should also have modes like sunlight and nigh watch, which aid in retracing your steps in the dark.

If you are looking for some fishing, then your GPS can also tell you about the weather changes. All you need to do is to just subscribe to a weather channel.

These are some of the basic things which need to be there in your portable handheld GPS in order to make it ideal for lake boating.
